Mr. Robins began his career while a student at what is now the Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, during which time he interned at Dean Witter Reynolds, and IDS Financial Services (later acquired by Morgan Stanley, and Ameriprise, respectively). After graduating from the Broad business school with a degree in Finance in 1990, he became a licensed broker/agent and moved to metro Detroit as an advisor with Equitable Financial. In 1992 he returned to the Lansing area to join a private retirement plan consulting/administration firm, focusing on corporate and individual retirement plans as well as constructing retirement plan investment portfolios. He was a founding member of the firm’s Investment Management Group (IMG), and spent almost 18 years with the company before establishing Capital Retirement Advisers in 2010.

“My interest in finance and investing began when I was 12 years old. On my father’s recommendation, I made my first stock investment, buying five shares of the Detroit Edison Company for about $65…including commission! For my bar mitzvah the following year, one of my parents’ friends (who was a stockbroker) gave me a gift of three more shares to add to my ‘portfolio.’ My dad, who is a pediatrician by background, shared with me his rather unique and unconventional method for tracking and monitoring investments, and it became a quarterly ritual I followed for many years. As I reached my late 30s, practicality overcame sentimentality and I sold all my shares (including those I had gained from reinvesting my dividends) for almost $500. While the experience makes a good story, more than anything it instilled in me the critical investor traits of patience and consistency (and the value of compound interest) that are integral to my client recommendations and investment decisions today.”

In addition to his finance degree, Mr. Robins studied advanced pension and retirement plan design at Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management. He is also a Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor (CPFA®) designee with the National Association of Plan Advisors (NAPA), and has  obtained the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies.

He is a member of the Financial Services Institute as well as the Financial Planning Association. He and his wife reside in Okemos, Michigan, and their twin daughters attend Michigan State University  and The Ohio State University.
